Safety Officer – EHS (Steel Plant)

About the role

The Safety Officer – EHS will oversee occupational health, safety and environmental standards across a steel manufacturing plant, covering high‑risk areas such as molten metal handling, hot rolling and heavy equipment. Reporting to the Manager – EHS, the role focuses on preventing injuries, fires and environmental incidents through inspections, permits, training and incident investigations.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct daily plant‑wide safety inspections, hazard identification and risk assessments (HIRA/JSA) for all operations and contractor activities.
• Manage permit‑to‑work and lockout/tagout procedures for hot work, confined spaces, work at height and electrical tasks.
• Supervise safe handling of molten metal, hot strip, rolling stands and coil yard activities, ensuring proper PPE and guarding.
• Monitor crane, hoist and lifting equipment safety, verify certifications and conduct lifting audits.
• Lead fire safety, emergency drills and coordinate response with internal teams and external agencies.
• Investigate incidents and near‑misses, prepare root‑cause reports and drive corrective actions.
• Support environmental monitoring of emissions, waste and noise, and maintain statutory records.

Required profile

• Diploma or bachelor’s degree in engineering (mechanical, electrical, metallurgical, chemical, industrial or environmental) and a recognised EHS certification (NEBOSH, IOSH, etc.).
• Minimum 5 years of industrial safety experience, preferably in steel or heavy‑manufacturing environments.
• Strong knowledge of occupational health and safety legislation and ISO 45001/ISO 14001 standards.
