Head of Merchant Mill Operations

About the role

The Head of Merchant Mill will lead and manage the complete merchant mill operations, producing long steel products such as TMT bars, wire rods, angles, channels and other structural sections. Reporting to the Plant Head, this senior position is responsible for meeting production targets, maximising rolling yield, ensuring BIS‑standard product quality and driving continuous improvement across all rolling processes.

Key responsibilities

• Plan, monitor and achieve daily, weekly and monthly rolled tonnage targets for all long products.
• Lead end‑to‑end rolling mill operations including reheating furnace, roughing, intermediate and finishing stands, TMT quenching system and finishing lines.
• Optimise billet utilisation, mill capacity and rolling resources to maximise productivity.
• Coordinate rolling schedules based on sales priorities, customer orders and billet availability.
• Improve billet‑to‑finished‑product rolling yield through pass design optimisation and loss reduction.
• Monitor fuel consumption, reheating efficiency and specific power consumption.
• Ensure compliance with BIS IS 1786 (TMT bars) and IS 2062 (structural products) quality standards.
• Coordinate preventive and shutdown maintenance activities to maintain high mill availability.
• Support predictive maintenance and spare‑parts management initiatives.
