Staff Writer – Development

About the role

The Staff Writer (Development) will produce in‑depth journalism for Nepal Connect’s Development section, covering topics such as infrastructure, economy, health, education, technology, aid, environment and urbanisation. The role demands data‑informed reporting, rigorous sourcing and the ability to explain complex systems to an informed general audience.

Key responsibilities

• Write feature stories (1,200‑2,500 words) that start with a human or place narrative and expand to policy context, data analysis and future outlook.
• Produce analytical pieces (800‑1,500 words) following a thesis‑evidence‑counterpoint‑synthesis structure on defined development issues.
• Conduct Q&A interviews with development professionals, government officials, NGOs and community members.
• Occasionally create cross‑category articles where development intersects with Current Affairs or History.

Required profile

• Proven track record of rigorous, data‑driven journalism on development, policy or social issues.
• Ability to write clearly and compellingly about complex systems for an informed readership.
• Established source relationships within Nepal’s development, government or civil‑society sectors.
• Strong competence in reading, interpreting and presenting quantitative data accurately.
• Excellent sourcing and verification discipline.
• Fluent written English to British standards.
• Experience handling sensitive topics such as poverty, displacement and discrimination without sensationalism.
