Assistant Manager – Legal (E‑commerce)

About the role

The Assistant Manager – Legal will support the implementation of e‑commerce solutions across a fast‑moving regulatory environment. You will advise on contractual, compliance and operational matters while collaborating with regional legal teams and external counsel.

Key responsibilities

• Draft, review and negotiate a variety of contracts, including customer terms, partnership, marketing, technology, supply and data‑protection agreements.
• Provide day‑to‑day legal support on intellectual property, consumer protection, data privacy, IT security, payments and dispute resolution.
• Interact with regulators, attend inquiries before the Department of Commerce, Supplies and Consumer Protection, and make submissions as needed.
• Represent the company in court proceedings and coordinate with external counsel to manage the case portfolio.
• Prepare board resolutions and handle company secretarial duties.
• Collaborate with regional legal teams in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan and other Alibaba group entities.
• Support group‑wide legal compliance programmes, policies and guidelines.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Law with a valid Advocate licence.
• 3‑5 years of relevant legal experience, preferably from top‑tier law firms or in‑house roles in reputable companies.
• Experience in trade, corporate/commercial, IP, data privacy or consumer protection is a plus.
• Ability to work independently in a high‑pressure, dynamic technology or e‑commerce environment.
• Strong critical‑thinking, drafting and communication skills.
• Professional ethics and a commercial‑practical mindset.
