General Manager – Hot Strip Mill

About the role

The General Manager – Hot Strip Mill leads all operations of the hot strip mill, overseeing the production of hot‑rolled coils and sheets. Reporting to the Plant Head, the role ensures that production targets, quality standards, and safety requirements are consistently met while driving efficiency and cost optimisation.

Key responsibilities

• Plan, organise and achieve daily, weekly and monthly production targets for HR coils and sheets.
• Maintain uninterrupted operation of reheating furnace, rough mill, finishing stands, run‑out table, cooling system and coilers.
• Optimise rolling schedules, product sequencing and campaign planning to minimise width changes, cobbles, delays and yield losses.
• Ensure smooth slab flow from the Steel Melting Shop to the Hot Strip Mill.
• Control strip quality parameters such as thickness (AGC), width (AWC), flatness, crown and surface integrity.
• Monitor compliance with standards including IS 2062, IS 10748 and customer‑specific requirements.
• Lead process‑optimisation initiatives to improve yield, productivity, energy efficiency and cost per ton.
• Coordinate planned shutdowns and preventive maintenance with mechanical, electrical and automation teams.
• Lead a multidisciplinary team, manage manpower planning, training and performance management.

Required profile

• Extensive experience in hot‑strip mill operations or similar steel rolling environments.
• Proven track record of meeting production targets while maintaining high quality and safety standards.
• Strong leadership and people‑management skills, with ability to develop high‑performance teams.
• Excellent problem‑solving abilities and a data‑driven approach to process improvement.

Required skills

• Automatic Gauge Control (AGC) and Automatic Width Control (AWC) systems.
• Knowledge of Indian Standards IS 2062 and IS 10748.
• Process optimisation and yield improvement techniques.
• Maintenance planning and coordination for high‑availability equipment.
