International Consultant – Rainbow Trout Grow‑out, Hatchery, Genetics & Feed

About the role

The Aquaculture Modernization Project seeks an experienced international consultant to lead technical improvements in rainbow trout grow‑out, hatchery operations, genetics and feed formulation in Nepal. The consultant will work closely with government agencies, private hatcheries, feed mills and the project team to develop and pilot enhanced protocols.

Key responsibilities

• Assess current trout grow‑out production, hatchery practices, broodstock management and feed systems.
• Design and pilot upgraded incubation systems, including vertical incubators, to improve egg survivability.
• Develop genetic improvement plans, including stock assessment and selective breeding strategies.
• Review and revise feed formulations for all life‑stage stages, recommending alternative protein sources.
• Draft regulatory guidelines, codes of conduct and quality assurance procedures for hatchery and feed operations.
• Provide training of trainers (TOT) for master trainers and support knowledge transfer to local stakeholders.

Required profile

• Advanced degree in Aquaculture, Fisheries Science, Animal Genetics or related field.
• Minimum 8 years of professional experience in trout or salmonid hatchery management, genetics and feed formulation.
• Proven experience delivering technical assistance and capacity‑building in developing‑country contexts.
• Fluency in English; knowledge of Nepali is an advantage.
