Senior Software Engineer

About the role

Paymentology is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to design, build, and scale Java backend services that power a global payments platform. You will lead end‑to‑end delivery, influence technical strategy, and help raise engineering standards across the organization.

Key responsibilities

• Design and develop distributed backend services, APIs and micro‑services.
• Own features from architecture through coding, testing, observability and deployment.
• Write clean, maintainable, well‑tested code using test‑driven development.
• Break down complex technical work into manageable tasks and collaborate in an agile, cross‑functional team.
• Mentor associate and mid‑level engineers, fostering technical excellence.
• Identify and deliver performance, reliability and scalability improvements.
• Participate in incident response and on‑call rotation (one week out of every five).

Required profile

• 5+ years of commercial experience with modern Java (15+, moving to 21).
• Proven experience designing, building and maintaining distributed systems and micro‑services.
• Deep understanding of object‑oriented programming and system design.
• Familiarity with event‑driven architectures or Domain‑Driven Design.
• Strong grasp of relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL) and data modeling.
• Solid knowledge of cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred), containerisation, CI/CD and Infrastructure‑as‑Code.
• Experience in fintech, payments or other high‑throughput regulated domains.
• Passion for learning, growth and collaboration.
