Senior Software Engineer - Java Backend

About the role

Paymentology powers card issuing for banks, fintechs and digital brands worldwide. It is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to design, build and scale Java backend services that power its global payments infrastructure. The engineer leads end-to-end delivery, contributes to technical strategy and helps raise the engineering bar across the organisation.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the design and development of backend services, distributed systems and APIs
• Own features end-to-end: architecture, coding, testing, observability and deployment
• Write clean, maintainable, well-tested code following best practices and test-driven development
• Break down complex technical work into manageable chunks
• Mentor associate and mid-level engineers
• Identify, document and deliver technical improvements in performance, reliability and scalability
• Participate in incident response and support rotations, including an on-call rotation of one week out of every five

Required profile

• Significant commercial experience with modern Java 15 (the company is moving to 21)
• Multiple projects with 5+ years of experience
• Proven experience designing, building and maintaining distributed systems and microservices
• Experience in fintech, payments or other high-throughput, regulated domains
• Strong system design experience and ability to make architectural decisions

Required skills

• Deep understanding of object-oriented programming
• Familiarity with event-driven architectures or Domain Driven Design
• Relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL) and data modelling
• Solid understanding of cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred), containerisation, CI/CD and Infrastructure-as-Code
