Assistant General Manager – Merchant Mill Operations

About the role

The Assistant General Manager (AGM) – Merchant Mill will lead the complete merchant mill operation, producing long steel products such as TMT bars, wire rods, angles, channels and other structural sections. Reporting to the Plant Head, the AGM is responsible for meeting production targets, maximising rolling yield, ensuring BIS‑standard product quality and driving continuous improvement.

Key responsibilities

• Plan, monitor and achieve daily, weekly and monthly rolled tonnage targets for all long products.
• Oversee end‑to‑end rolling mill processes including reheating furnace, roughing/intermediate/finishing stands, TMT quenching, cooling beds and finishing lines.
• Optimise billet utilisation, mill capacity and rolling resources to maximise productivity.
• Improve billet‑to‑finished‑product rolling yield through pass‑design optimisation, loss reduction and fuel‑consumption monitoring.
• Ensure compliance with BIS IS 1786 (TMT bars) and IS 2062 (structural products) quality standards, coordinate testing and certification.
• Coordinate preventive and shutdown maintenance with mechanical and electrical teams to maintain high equipment availability.
• Lead continuous‑improvement initiatives aimed at throughput enhancement and cost reduction.

Required profile

• Proven experience in managing merchant mill or similar steel rolling operations.
• Accountability for achieving production targets and maintaining product quality.
• Ability to coordinate multi‑disciplinary teams (production, quality, maintenance).
• Strong knowledge of BIS standards for TMT bars and structural steel.
