Technical support for WASH in Schools and Systems Strengthening

About the role

The consultant will provide time‑bound technical, field‑level and implementation support to UNICEF’s WASH team for the China‑supported Adolescent Development Programme in Madhesh Province. The role covers a six‑month period focused on WASH activities in schools, including assessments, infrastructure planning, monitoring and capacity development.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct WASH/MHM assessments in 118 schools and prioritize 64 schools for infrastructure support.
• Prepare technical designs, BoQs, specifications and monitor construction/rehabilitation works.
• Support O&M capacity development, EMIS/WASH data strengthening and reusable sanitary‑pad initiatives.
• Provide technical inputs for partner engagement, government coordination, reporting and programme learning.

Required profile

• Master’s degree in civil engineering or related field (or Bachelor’s plus Master’s in environmental/public health).
• Minimum five years of progressive experience in WASH programming, especially WASH in schools and MHM.
• Demonstrated experience in Nepal, preferably Madhesh Province, with government and partner coordination.
• Fluency in written and spoken Nepali and English; knowledge of Maithili or Bhojpuri is an asset.

Required skills

• Civil engineering technical knowledge.
• WASH in schools, menstrual hygiene management (MHM) and climate‑resilient, gender‑responsive, disability‑inclusive WASH.
• Review of WASH designs, BoQs, cost estimates and implementation schedules.
• Familiarity with EMIS, NWASH‑MIS and other WASH/education data systems.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office for data management and reporting.
