Induction Furnace Manager

About the role

The Induction Furnace Manager will lead the complete performance of the Steel Melting Shop (SMS) induction furnace operations in a greenfield/start‑up environment. Reporting to the Head of Meltshop, the role combines hands‑on leadership with strategic planning to meet production targets, optimise energy use and ensure metallurgical quality.

Key responsibilities

• Lead end‑to‑end induction furnace operations, including melting, refining and tapping cycles.
• Develop and execute heat plans, tapping schedules and furnace campaign strategies.
• Optimise power panel performance to achieve best‑in‑class energy consumption (kWh/tonne).
• Control alloy additions to meet chemistry specifications and minimise rework.
• Optimise charge mix (scrap, sponge iron, alloys) for yield and cost efficiency.
• Manage refractory lifecycle, lining practices, performance monitoring and procurement.
• Coordinate with charge preparation, maintenance and quality teams for seamless operations.
• Plan shift schedules, deploy manpower and manage shop‑floor productivity.
• Troubleshoot electrical, mechanical and process issues affecting furnace performance.
• Monitor process control parameters such as temperature, slag chemistry and melt time.
• Drive continuous‑improvement initiatives to reduce downtime and stabilise operations.
• Ensure strict adherence to safety standards and incident‑prevention protocols.
• Maintain accurate production reporting, heat logs and performance analysis.

Required profile

• B.Tech in Metallurgy (preferred) or a related engineering discipline.
• Minimum 10 years of experience in induction furnace operations within steel or metallurgical production.
• Proven track record of achieving production targets and improving energy efficiency.
• Demonstrated experience in refractory management and furnace campaign optimisation.
• Strong understanding of safety and environmental compliance in a steel melting environment.

Required skills

• Hands‑on experience with medium/high‑frequency induction furnace operation.
• Deep knowledge of metallurgy, scrap behaviour, alloying and slag control.
• Power consumption optimisation (kWh/tonne reduction).
• Refractory management and lining lifecycle improvement.
• Furnace power‑system and panel operation expertise.
• Charge mix design and yield improvement techniques.
• Pollution control and compliance norms for steel melting shops.
