Disaster Risk Reduction & Early Warning System Analyst

About the role

The Disaster Risk Reduction / Management and Early Warning System Analyst will support a US$36 million Green Climate Fund‑financed project aimed at reducing the risk and impacts of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) in Nepal. The role focuses on strengthening institutional and technical capacities, implementing physical protection measures, and establishing robust hazard monitoring and early‑warning mechanisms for high‑risk glacial lakes.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct comprehensive risk assessments of priority glacial lakes (Thulagi, Lower Barun, Lumding Tsho, Hongu 2) and their downstream basins.
• Design, pilot, and operationalise early‑warning systems, integrating both grey and green infrastructure solutions.
• Coordinate with national and local authorities, communities, and UN agencies to ensure alignment with national disaster risk reduction strategies.
• Develop technical documentation, monitoring reports, and policy recommendations.
• Support capacity‑building activities for local stakeholders on GLOF risk management and early‑warning operations.

Required profile

• Advanced degree (Master’s or higher) in disaster risk management, climate change, environmental engineering, or a related field.
• Proven experience in GLOF, flood, or similar natural‑hazard risk projects, preferably in mountainous regions.
• Strong understanding of Nepal’s geographical and socio‑economic context.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
